As I drove back home from the doctor this morning, I had one of those magic moments. The sort that only seems to happen when we can’t plan for them. I was cruising up I-35 towards home, windows down, some pop punk from my middle school days blasting, and as I turned my head up, singing along, I felt a moment of peace and happiness that doesn’t come often enough. The sort of automotive high you get when you nail an apex on your favorite road, when you laugh along with friends during a road trip. There are types of highs that only people like you and I can get.

I downshifted to fourth, let the big inline four work as it pulls me faster and faster along with the frenetic pace of the music, moving along a road that is much loved here in Austin. Summer means empty roads while the adults are at work, and those of us “Millennials” get to play. According to the car companies, the stick shift, rear drive, Porsche isn’t what I want. I want a small little econobox that I can lease for 3 years. But no, this is what I want. I want to drive my Porsche, hard. I want to feel the car move under me, I want to feel the road through the steering, and I want to be able to put my full attention on the road.

I stop for gas, a drink, and to admire my car. Dirty again, testament to the fun I have had today. Red Sonja was a good girl, her massive hips still in check, the plastic spoiler dirty from doing its job, and of course, the big four cylinder ticking itself cool. I had been driving four an hour. The best medicine I could have asked for. As I fill her up, I think of how lucky I am to have this amazing machine in my life, a machine that is far more than just that. This car is alive, and she loves being alive. And do you know what she loves most? She loves making me feel alive.

Those highs we get? They are our reminders that even though we all die someday, maybe even behind the wheel, but that doesn’t mean we go quietly. The summer blend of great music, great driving, and great cars, they give this life of ours a high point, and all we have to do is keep driving.

That was wonderfully written and very true. I also like that you named your car Red Sonja. Did you name her after the comic book character like another Red Sonja was?

It’s moments like you just described that are reasons why I love cars. You can experience it in a Porsche or my beat up old truck. It's magical
